Suggested itinerary for Auckland, Rotorua, Lake Taupo & the Bay of Plenty

Day 1 - ARRIVE AUCKLAND

  • Arrive Auckland airport, collect your rental car and explore some city attractions
  • Visit Auckland inner city attractions - perhaps the Auckland City Art Gallery, the Auckland Museum or the National Maritime Museum.
  • Sail in the City of Sails! The Pride of Auckland has a fleet of large purpose-built sailboats on the sheltered waters of the sparkling Auckland Harbour. Pride offers value for money with quality sailing and dining experiences.
  • Lunch at one of the Mission Bay waterfront cafes, then to Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World and Antarctic Encounter.
  • In the afternoon or evening, take the ride up the Sky Tower for spectacular city views.
  • Maybe finish the evening with a flutter at the Sky City Casino or a visit to some of the bars around Vulcan Lane.
  • Overnight accommodation in Auckland

    Day 2 - AUCKLAND to ROTORUA
    Drive: 233km / 3.5 hours

  • Drive to Waitimo Glow Worm Caves
  • Tumu Tumu Toobing with Waitimo Adventures - This is a fun excursion, which combines cave rafting on giant inflated tubes and walking and climbing through the dry sections of Tumutuma Cave. This spectacular cave is lit by a myriad glowworms and is renowned for its massive stalactites and rock sculptures.
  • Continue on to Rotorua
  • Overnight accommodation in Rotorua

    Day 3 - ROTORUA to LAKE TAUPO
    Drive: 80km / 1.2 hours

  • Explore the Rotorua & Taupo regions.
  • Ride the Skyline Gondola for lunch overlooking Rotorua and ride the luge back down.
  • Relax with a massage and a hot mineral bath in the Polynesian Spa
  • Enjoy some trout fishing.
  • Overnight accommodation at Lake Taupo

    Day 4 - LAKE TAUPO to COROMANDEL

  • Head towards the Coromandel Peninsula via the Bay of Plenty
  • Hop in a helicopter or on a cruise to White Island, NZ's only continually active volcano (you can walk right into the crater area).
  • For awesome views of the coastline, put an hour and a half aside for a walk to the top of Mount Maunganui.
  • Swim with the dolphins in Tauranga or Whakatane.
  • Overnight accommodation at the Coromandel Peninsula

    Day 5 - COROMANDEL to AUCKLAND
    Drive: 166km / 2 hours

  • Return to Auckland
