Suggested itinerary for Auckland, Bay of Islands & Rotorua

Day 1 - ARRIVE AUCKLAND

  • Arrive in Auckland and collect your hire car
  • Overnight accommodation in Auckland

    Day 2 - AUCKLAND

  • At leisure in Auckland, the 'City of Sails'.
  • Visit Auckland inner city attractions - perhaps the Auckland City Art Gallery, the Auckland Museum or the National Maritime Museum
  • Sail in the City of Sails! The Pride of Auckland has a fleet of large purpose-built sailboats on the sheltered waters of the sparkling Auckland Harbour. Pride offers value for money with quality sailing and dining experiences
  • Lunch at one of the Mission Bay waterfront cafes, then to Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World and Antarctic Encounter
  • In the afternoon or evening, take the ride up the Sky Tower for spectacular city views.
  • Maybe finish the evening with a flutter at the Sky City Casino or a visit to some of the bars around Vulcan Lane
  • Overnight in Auckland

    Day 3 - AUCKLAND to BAY OF ISLANDS
    Drive: 235km / 4 hours

  • Head to the beautiful Bay of Islands
  • Stop halfway for lunch in the city of Whangarei (Town Basin has waterfront eateries and shops).
  • Explore the majestic Waipoua kauri forest and visit the Kauri Museum in Matakohe
  • Spend the afternoon visiting the Waitangi National Reserve or the historic sites, shops and galleries in Kerikeri
  • Dinner in one of the waterfront restaurants in Paihia or Russell
  • Overnight accommodation in the Bay of Islands

    Day 4 - BAY OF ISLANDS

  • At leisure to enjoy the attractions of the Bay of Islands & Northlands
  • Take a half-day cruise (perhaps the Hole In The Rock) trip or a morning swim with the dolphins
  • Take a leisurely drive west via the Hokianga Harbour, stopping to cruise to the giant sand dunes
  • Ferry ride to the historic town of Russell
  • Overnight in Bay of Islands

    Day 5 - BAY OF ISLANDS to ROTORUA
    Flights: Kerikeri to Auckland - 45 minutes & Auckland to Rotorua - 40 minutes

  • This morning drive to Kerikeri airport fly to Auckland for your onward flight to Rotorua.
  • Upon arrival in Rotorua, collect your car and explore the Rotorua region. The seething power of inner earth comes to the surface in Rotorua. Nearby is Lake Taupo, a great lake and an even greater choice of adventures in the heart of the North Island.
  • Overnight accommodation in Rotorua

    Day 6 - ROTORUA

  • At leisure to explore many wonders of the geothermal city and nearby attractions:
  • Ride the Skyline Gondola for lunch overlooking Rotorua and ride the luge back down.
  • Relax with a massage and a hot mineral bath in the Polynesian Spa…
  • Enjoy some trout fishing at Lake Taupo.
  • Overnight in Rotorua

    Day 7 - ROTORUA to AUCKLAND
    Drive: 233km / 3.5 hours

  • Head back to Auckland via the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves
